People with narcissistic, Machiavellian, and psychopathic personalities are the most successful in office environments, a psychologist and author Oliver James suggests.

In his new book “Office Politics,” James identified three types of dysfunctional workers in modern workplaces: psychopaths, Machiavellian, and narcissist. According to James, the people most likely to thrive in office are ‘triadic’ people, who are a combination of all three.

He alleged that the triadic people’s self-centeredness, sense of deceit, and lack of empathy can help them reach the top of their respective chains of commands.

James argued that modern office tends to reward people with such behavior.

“Whether you work in the corporate sector, a small business or a public sector job, the system you are in is liable to reward ruthless, selfish manipulation,” he said in his book.

Disregard for other people’s feelings combined with Machiavellian traits of ‘doing whatever necessary,’ enables the triadic people to make tough, ruthless choices such as firing an entire department.

In addition, their narcissistic traits allow them to project unwavering confidence, and quickly blame others for failures, according to James.

The success at work comes at a price, James added, as triadic people are susceptible to trouble in their personal relationships. They are reluctant to take responsibility or accept failure, which tends to strain any relationship they have with another person.

그는 현대 사회의 일터가 대부분 “무자비하고, 이기적이며, 다른 사람들을 이용하는” 태도를 갖고 있는 사람들에게 유리하도록 만들어져 있다고 말했다.

제임스의 이론에 따르면, 다른 사람들을 고려하지 않는 성향과 ‘필요한 것은 무엇이든 해내는’ 마키아벨리적 성격을 모두 갖고 있는 사람들은 대량 해고 등 가차없는 조치를 망설임 없이 해낼 수 있다는 것이다.

또한 이들의 자아도취적인 성격으로 인해 다른 사람들에게 ‘흔들리지 않는 자신감’을 보여줄 수 있으며, 실패를 했을 시에도 다른 사람들에게 책임을 떠넘기는데 주저하지 않는다는 것이다.

그러나 이러한 성공에는 대가가 따르기 마련인데, 제임스는 3위일체 성격을 지난 사람들은 다른 사람들과의 관계에서 어려움을 겪는 경향이 있다고 설명했다.

이들은 자아도취적 성격으로 인해 책임을 지거나 실패를 받아들이기 어려워하는 성향을 보이는데, 이로 인해 대인관계가 파탄이 나는 경우가 많다는 것이다. (코리아헤럴드)
