When I saw her again, I could hardly recognize her.

When I see her again, I won't recognize her.

Jane left the cafe when I got there.

When she answered my question, I gave her some money.

When he got to the theater, the play had already started.
When he got to the theater, the play had been playing.

When he was here with me, I was happy.

By the time I finish

By the time I finish, it will be time to go to bed.

By the time I get to the cafe, she will have already left.

그러므로 교재에 나온 문제를 by the time I finish, it will have been time to go to bed.

It was starting to rain은 맞는 것 같은데요.

We'd been playing soccer for about half an hour when it started to rain heavily.

had started to play soccer                                    started to rain
                ↓----------------( half an hour )------------------------↓
-------------|-------------------------------------------------------------|-----------------------|----
                    We had been playing soccer-------------------->

그리고 먼저 일어나서 나중에 일어나는 일과 만나게 되면 앞에 일어나서 계속된 것은 had been ~ing 혹은 was/were ~ing 로 나타내고요.

My sister Lauren burned her hand while she was cooking dinner.

It was starting to rain.
